 Designed to help audiences to get to know whisky in novel ways, a number of interactive experiences are also planned. ‘We wanted to create an event with a difference – something that would excite whisky aficionados but also attract new drinkers’, says Scott Martin, co-founder of the Edinburgh Whisky Stramash.

Martin is secretive about exactly what’s on offer, but Glenfiddich are set to return with Warehouse 47 – their interactive virtual warehouse that lets ticket holders explore the inner workings of a distillery. Deanston, meanwhile, will take guests back in time with a vintage photo wall, dressing them as distillery workers from days of old, before they are transported back into the 21^st century with demonstrations of the latest techniques in molecular mixology.

Whisky Stramash announces new line up for 2013 The Edinburgh Whisky Stramash has revealed a line up of top drinks brands for 2013 eager to put convention aside, and embrace a new style of whisky festival.

Headliners who have already committed to appear include Glenfiddich, AnCnoc, The Macallan, Highland Park, Laphroaig and Deanston. More brands are currently in talks with the organisers to devise new exhibits to excite and immerse visitors which are due to be announced soon.

The event is making a return to the Surgeon’s Hall this May (25th & 26th) following its hugely successful first year, which succeeded in attracting 2,100 consumers over 2 days.

Not your average whisky festival, the Whisky Stramash offers brands a unique opportunity to engage with new audiences via an array of unique experiential events that allow whisky to be encountered in a novel and entertaining manner.

It is designed to appeal to younger consumers with an appetite for adventure, as well as Scotch purists open to intrigue. As a result the organisers are notoriously secretive about what the Stramash has in store.

However what we can tell you is that for 2013 Glenfiddich will return with Warehouse 47, an interactive virtual warehouse that lets ticket holders explore the inner workings of a distillery. AnCnoc through its work with New York based freelance illustrator, Peter Arkle, will be letting ticket holders express their love of whisky on canvas, and Deanston will take guests back in time with a vintage photo wall, dressing them as distillery workers from days of old, before they are hauled kicking and screaming back into the 21st century with demonstrations of the latest techniques in molecular mixology.

The Jura Murder Mystery, an experience at this year’s Whisky Stramash, allows audiences to witness the suspense shortly after the gruesome demise of a fictitious Jura Distillery Manager in a classic whodunnit. Peter Capaldi has been cast as the murdered Distillery Manager who comes to life to tell the story in the production that has been described as “Scoobie Do meets Coronation Street”. At the conclusion of the play, audiences will be invited to guess who they suspect the perpetrator to be for the chance of winning a once in a lifetime trip to Jura.

Glenfiddich Warehouse 47 will tease all five senses by immersing small groups in an atmospheric room where guests will be taken on a pioneering virtual tour of the Glenfiddich Distillery stillhouse, cooperage and warehouses.

Hosted by Glenfiddich Ambassador, Jamie Milne, the experience will also feature whisky barrels, aroma samples, photographs and advertising images from Glenfiddich’s past and present, as well as a chance to try your hand at making a whisky barrel. The whole experience will really bring a tasting of Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18 year old whiskies to life.

Multi-award winning mixologist Jon O’Connor will be on-hand to create bespoke whisky cocktails at The Cocktail Pod. Visitors will help the bartender choose from an amazing array of ingredients to create their perfect cocktail and they will receive a copy of their recipe so they can recreate it at home.

The Molecular Experiments will focus on whisky in different and unusual ways including: whisky caviar, a range of gourmet infused whisky and smoking unpeated whisky by Stramash’s very own Heston Blumenthal-esque chemist.

A Sweeney Todd-style bladed barber surgeon, in partnership with Dewar’s Blended Whisky, will offer those brave enough to volunteer procedures of the follicle kind.

Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky is sponsoring the Murder Mystery, which will entice and entertain. The classic whodunit will give one lucky visitor the chance to win a once in a lifetime trip to Jura, including a special distillery tour, if the cunning culprit is guessed correctly.

Organisers of the Whisky Stramash, which takes place for the first time at Edinburgh’s Surgeons’ Hall on 26th & 27th May, are on the search for an amateur dramatics group to act out the gruesome game, which is being sponsored by Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Colleges, universities and drama clubs from across the Central Belt are invited to audition and compete against other groups across the country for the chance to take part and win £1,000 cash prize. The winning group will be invited to the event to act out dramatic death scenes, plotting along the way and leaving clues to grip the unsuspecting audience, before helping to uncover the cunning culprit.

Darroch Ramsay, founding partner of the Whisky Stramash, said:

“This is an exciting time to be part of the event, particularly as this is the first. The atmosphere is set to be extraordinary, with the combination of the historical location at the Surgeons’ Hall and the weird and wonderful experiences we are offering, including the murder mystery.
